Retired Postal Carrier appreciates books by mail

Thomas and Marleen

In 2002, Thomas’s active retirement life with his wife Marlene was forever changed when a stroke left him permanently blind.

Thomas and Marlene enjoy memories of the many trips they’ve taken with their grandchildren to Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion and other national parks. They make their home in the Methow Valley in eastern Washington, "one of God’s most beautiful settings."

Thomas says he has his "ups and downs" but is "coping well, considering." He learned about Tape Ministries through his son-in-law, who is also blind.

Thomas and Marlene met at church, and faith continues to play an important part in their lives, even though their current church is 54 miles from home. Thomas relies on Christian radio and on our books on tape to keep spiritually fed.

Marlene, a retired mail carrier, has a special appreciation for the faithful Postal workers who bring the tapes. She says, “We really anticipate receiving new books. I listen when I can, but I also enjoy how those talking books 'free me up’ while Thomas is busy listening."

Recently one of their sons covered up his eyes for an hour, so he could try to experience what life without sight is like for his dad. He reports “I was about to go out of my noodle. Those tapes have to be a life line for dad."
